Carl Safina's upcoming fourth book, with a working title of The View From Lazy Point, will be a broad-ranging narrative of travels and an exploration of the how the world is changing, what's at stake, and how much remains to work with.
From his home on Eastern Long Island, Safina will begin with personal stories of nature, seasons, and migrations in his neighborhood before expanding to globe-ranging travels from the high arctic to Antarctica and across half the tropics. Safina will write about environmental problems but also about the vitality and resiliency of life. The beauty and spiritual power of nature will be evident in Safina's encounters with polar bears, Eskimos, salmon, penguins, corals, and tropical fishes. Throughout, he will show how problems of nature, the environment, and conservation are actually moral problems that affect everything, including the economy, human dignity, and the prospects for peace.
The book is scheduled for publication in early 2010.
Safina is author of Song for the Blue Ocean, Eye of the Albatross, and Voyage of the Turtle. His scientific acumen, sense of adventure, and elegant descriptions of the mystery, magnificence, and importance of the sea and its creatures make him one of today’s most important conservation voices. He bridges the gap between the scientific and literary worlds, with a hopeful message that provides an important balance to environmental gloom and doom.
