Marine conservation encompasses a wonderful cornucopia of life–creatures that live in the ocean or glide above it. These players in the great ocean drama are intimately connected to the health of the seas, as are we all.
It is a full cast but the individual characters are so remarkable, and often imperiled. They deserve the limelight. A handful shine here through the writings of Blue Ocean’s founder, Dr. Carl Safina.
Seabirds and Other Seafood Lovers
I got a letter from the United States Federal Bird Banding Laboratory. (Yes there is such a thing.) I was pretty surprised. In the 1980s I studied seabirds and hawks, and I banded many thousands of birds. But that was a long while back. I no longer have a banding license—though I miss those days—and I haven’t put a band on a bird’s leg in 20 years.
