Carl Safina Named a Finalist for 2014 Indianapolis Prize

INDIANAPOLIS — Carl Safina, Ph.D., is one of six exceptional conservationists advancing as a finalist for the 2014 Indianapolis Prize, the world’s leading award for animal conservation. Selected from a group of 39 nominees, Safina is in the running for $250,000 along with Joel Berger, Ph.D.; Gerardo Ceballos, Ph.D.; Carl Jones, Ph.D.; Russell A. Mittermeier, Ph.D.; and Patricia C. Wright, Ph.D. These heroes were nominated and named finalists for their outstanding achievements on behalf of the world’s most endangered species.

Carl Safina is Lead Scientist for GYRE Expedition, Southwest Alaska

On June 7, an international team of scientists, artists and educators will launch an expedition to study the global marine debris crisis from one of the most breathtaking places on the planet: southwest Alaska. The Gyre project is a collaboration between the Anchorage Museum and Alaska SeaLife Center, in partnership with several national and Alaska-based organizations.

Support Bluefin Tuna

Thank the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) for taking a step in the right direction but ask them to go further! Surface longlines used to catch swordfish and yellowfin tuna also catch and kill hundreds of spawning Western Atlantic bluefin tuna in the Gulf of Mexico every year. To protect these severely depleted fish in their only known spawning area in the Western Atlantic, the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) just proposed that Gulf surface longline fishermen use an experimental hook that could reduce the incidental catch of bluefin. This action is a step in the right direction, but it is not a strong, long-term solution.
