2009 Winners
High School Junior Delphine Slotten of Mendham, NJ & High School Senior Khanh Nguyen of Lawndale, CA experienced an expedition in the Galapagos Islands in July 2009 aboard the National Geographic Endeavor.
"It was fascinating to be able to walk in Darwin's footsteps 150 years after his voyage and have the islands reveal the same evolutionary wonders to me...This ocean journey gave me the opportunity to not only observe the threats faced by the islands and the surrounding marine ecosystems, but also to be introduced to the conservation efforts being undertaken by a coalition of local people and concerned individuals worldwide and to witness their success."
- Delphine Slotten
"I was somewhat undecided on my major for college; however, reflecting on my experience, learning from the naturalists on board, and facing such tangible beauty of nature, I have grown more determined to make earth/environmental sciences my choice in college. I feel a great urge to preserve the unspoiled environment that I have seen for those around me and those in the future." - Khanh Nguyen
