Next Wave Youth Education
Learning about the Ocean
Blue Ocean is devoted to educating kids of all ages about the wonders of the ocean and the need to protect it. Our collective educational efforts are called “Next Wave.”
The Next Wave Youth Education Program consists of several components:
Next Wave NY is a seasonal education program based on Long Island, NY that is a collaboration with Long Island Aquarium. Read more.
From our home base at Stony Brook University (SBU), Dr. Safina teaches young scientists to distill their message into words non-scientists can understand at the Center for Communicating Science. Safina is a visiting professor in SBU’s Journalism School.
Dr. Safina also lectures at SBU’s School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) and mentors graduate students. Safina is an adjunct full professor at SoMAS.

Blue Ocean Institute offers the Kalpana Chawla “Spirit of Columbia” Scholarship annually to a deserving graduate student whose area of research broadens our understanding of on an important ocean issue.

SBU’s Center for Communicating Science
At Stony Brook University’s Center for Communicating Science (CCS) graduate students in a wide range of sciences learn how to communicate about their research with the general public. Carl Safina is a visiting professor with CCS and is teaching Master’s and PhD students how to distill and deliver their message in plain and compelling language.

Next Wave NY
From April through October, Blue Ocean’s partnership with the Long Island Aquarium brings over 15,000 students, teachers, and other participants into the Peconic Estuary.On-board and in-the-water classes introduces the complex web of life in the estuary and salt marshes through hands-on investigation, close-up observation,fish seining and guided walks.
