Lingcod – British Columbia
Lingcod, which aren’t actually related to cod, are found along the west coast of North America and live on the ocean bottom. Males can be especially sedentary, establishing territories before spawning and guarding fertilized eggs until they hatch. Lingcod were once depleted, but are now considered rebuilt.
Most commercially caught Lingcod are taken along with other groundfish in trawl fisheries. Some Lingcod are also caught with longlines, troll, and jig. Bycatch of depleted rockfish in these fisheries remains a problem. Bottom trawls can cause high damage to bottom ocean habitats, while longline, troll, and jig gears have low impacts on bottom ocean habitats.
