Lingcod – U.S. Alaska and Canada
Lingcod, which aren’t actually related to cod, are found along the west coast of North America and live on the ocean bottom. Males can be especially sedentary, establishing territories before spawning and guarding fertilized eggs until they hatch. Lingcod were once depleted, but are now considered rebuilt.
Most commercially caught Lingcod are taken along with other groundfish in trawl fisheries. Bycatch of depleted rockfish in trawl fisheries remains a problem and the trawls damage bottom ocean habitats. Some Lingcod are caught with hook and line, which have minimal affects on non-target species and bottom habitats.
