Tuna, Pacific Bluefin – Longline (Kuro maguro)
Pacific Bluefin Tuna are prized on the sashimi market and are mainly fished by Japanese vessels. Pacific Bluefin Tuna are typically found in the Western Pacific around Japan, in the central North Pacific and in the Eastern Pacific off Baja California. They migrate across the Pacific Ocean, from their spawning grounds in the western Pacific to the eastern Pacific.
Purse seining is one of three fishing methods commonly used to catch Pacific Bluefin Tuna and generally results in low bycatch and habitat damage.
Pacific Bluefin Tuna are at low levels of abundance.
